About Larimar:
Larimar is a type of pectolite, which is an acid silicate hydrate of calcium and sodium. Pectolite is found in many locations, but the Dominican Republic's blue pectolite is the only blue coloration discovered thus far. This blue color is the result of copper being substituted for the calcium. One mountainside, southwest of Barahona, is where the stone is / was mined.
Miocene volcanic rocks, andesites, and basalts, erupted within the limestones of the southern portion of the island. Giant air bubbles were later filled with a variety of minerals; the blue pectolite is a secondary occurence within the volcanic flows.
The blue color is photosensitive and fades with time if exposed to too much light and heat, so when not being worn, keep in dark storage. Mohs hardness is 4.5 to 5.0, so it is a relatively soft stone. Take care with your larimar.
